Integrative health focuses on the whole person—body, mind, and spirit. Providence Place Senior Living is pleased to offer the integrative therapies below. These are non-pharmacological measures that can be used in your journey towards health and healing.
Essential oils are extracts of plants used to restore balance to the body through the sense of smell. Essential oils have been shown to reduce anxiety, pain, and nausea; they can also impact mood and memory. We’ve found that essential oils are an extremely beneficial component of our integrative services. One example of this on our campus is the “Revive & Refresh” session offered by Community Life staff for memory care residents, using essential oils with warm, moist washcloths.
Hand and Foot Massage
The gentle use of touch to massage the hands and feet is a therapeutic way to soothe the muscles and help the whole body to relax. Essential oils are often used with the massage. People may feel surprised at how relaxed they feel after a hand or foot massage. On our campus, both staff and volunteers offer hand massage.
Music can help to lower stress, reduce pain, and improve sleep. It can also facilitate movement and provide an outlet for expression of feelings. Music CDs are available on each unit and Community Life staff can provide music resources for individual enjoyment and overall wellbeing. Providence Place also employs a full-time board-certified music therapist. Through specially designed group and individual music experiences, music therapy provides opportunities for decreased stress and anxiety, improved mood and self-esteem, pain management, sensory stimulation, memory recall, and connectedness.
Guided imagery is the practice of using your imagination to direct your thoughts towards healing. This therapy is effective in reducing pain anxiety, promoting sleep, and can help to support health and wellbeing. Audio CDs available on each unit and some people enjoy listening to a guided meditation on their mobile devices. Spoken guided imagery may be offered by staff or a volunteer.
Energy-Based Healing Modalities
With energy-based healing modalities, specially trained practitioners use their hands to help to restore the natural flow and balance of the body’s energy system. Often involving light touch, these gentle non-invasive sessions of Healing Touch or Reiki can bring comfort and promote rest, and allow the body to be in the best condition for healing.
